The history and origin of Sungudi sarees can be traced back to the Sourashtrians (Gujarat) who along with their migration brought this art to Southern India. Currently The Sungudi units are kept alive by less than 300 artisans and weavers of Sourashtra community, who migrated from Gujarat and settled in the city a few centuries ago. The Rajas of madurai has patroned the sungudi sarees and the sourashtran community weave sarees for the royals of the nayak kings , they are also learned vedas and become pandit , they worked as ministers in the kings palace
After the kingdom fell the community weave the same sungudi sarees & sell to all part of india and abroad as the sarees has been attracted by females for its artisain work. Madurai sungudi sarees is famous for its tie and dye work and Mr A.K Ramesh and his team are keping alive the traditional value of the sungudi sarees with exclusively fom natural dye.
Near Madurai While the entire village ardently spends their days on weaving this beautiful textile, Sungudi sarees are the major source of livelihood for more than 10,000 people in Madurai areas . With its main manufacturing unit and establishment in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, the Madurai Sungudi community belongs to the Sourashtrian community from Gujarat. The Authentic of sungudi saree was manufactured naturaly using trdaitional technology acquired from generations.
